What to Look For When Selecting a Heat Recovery Ventilator

What to Look For When Selecting a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV)

  • When selecting a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), you’ll need to consider the amount of fresh air needed for your unique space. This is typically done by your mechanical engineer or subcontractor using a standard called ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers) 62.1 or 62.2.
  • The loudness of HRVs is measured in sones. Compare the sones of various products to ensure you get the quietest product.
  • Consider Efficiency. The efficiency of HRVs is rated in the percent efficient. Most range from 60-80% efficient, but some higher-end products can achieve 90%+ efficiency. Talk to your installer to determine what efficiency makes sense for your home.
